My Story
Hi, I'm Katrina! I was born in Landstuhl, Germany and grew up in many locations around the world because my family moved frequently for my Dad's job. I never knew for sure what I wanted to do but have always been interested in STEM and building designs. I lived in Europe during middle school and had the opportunity to visit historic structures like the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona and Diocletian's Palace in Croatia. These architectural marvels amazed me that people from ancient times could create designs that still stand in modern times for people to admire. In high school, I read a lot about buildings that utilized renewable energy designs and took a CAD class where I learned how to use Revit to design residential homes. My interest in buildings combined with my liking for Revit programming led to my choice to study civil engineering. I hope to study building and structure design in college and eventually work in a firm that creates lasting and functional structures.
Reflections in Spring 2021
As 2020 ends and 2021 begins, I am starting my second sophomore semester in college. I have learned a lot in my 1.5 years in college. My main takeaway is things I've learned about my major - civil engineering. I did not have the opportunity last summer to intern in person, I was virtual due to COVID. I also have more civil classes under my belt like surveying and highway engineering. These courses teach me about the construction and field processes. Learning about this in the classroom makes me even more eager to get construction experience.
As an Omaha college student and Nebraska resident, I'm very familiar with the Omaha Eppley airport. I know that they are doing terminal rebuild so I'm looking forward to driving past and getting to see the construction process. Back in my hometown, roads and bridges are still getting fixed from serious flooding in Spring of 2019. So I also get to see the building process of other structure.
I came into college very interested in the design process, but after learning and getting exposure to construction and field engineering, this is another part of civil engineering that I am eager to experience.

Reflections in Fall 2021
I am beginning my junior year of college. I've had to summers of internships that have given me a strong foundation in the contracting and construction side of engineering. As I begin my upper-level courses and begin to think about specializing in my degree, I am looking for a design internship to round out my knowledge. Some classes I'm taking right now that I'm enjoying are my structural design class and lab and my fluid mechanics class.
Through this semester and next, I am looking forward to increasing my academic knowledge of engineering design and am looking for an internship to complement that.

My Experiences
ASCELast calendar year I served my organization as treasurer, in 2021 I am the Vice President. I assist the president with running meetings, making critical decisions, and I run the mentorship program.

Concrete CanoeI'm a member of my ASCE's Concrete Canoe team. This year I am looking to take a more active leadership role as I learn more about the mixing, molding, and testing process of building a canoe out of concrete!

OSHA CertificaionI earned my OSHA 10-Hour certification while interning at Kiewit for the summer. This certification is important to me because it shows that I value safety on the jobsite.
